Castello di Vezio

On Friday, 9/29, we hiked up to the castello or castle.  We started the hike from the south from Varenna which turned out to be every bit as challenging as the Pacific Crest Trail.  There were a couple of sections that were so steep we had to steady ourselves by holding on to the rocks on the side of the trail.  Also making the hike a challenge was the humidity.  The haze in the air from warm, moist air was making us very sweaty and difficult to cool off.

The views of Lake Como and Varenna were stunning.  We only wish we had had clear weather.

Below are pictures from the hike and Varenna.

Here is more info about the castle including the location:

We are in Italy!

We arrived in Lenno at 3:30 pm, Lenno time.  Travel time was 26 hrs.  This includes the layover in Frankfurt to catch the afternoon flight to Milan and the transfer by limosine to Lenno.

We looked kind of haggard so no jokes about the bags under Eric's eyes.

There were glitches along the way.  Southwest canceled our flight from Sac to Seattle within 15 minutes of boarding but we managed to rebook on Delta.  Southwest was of no help.

The other glitch occurred in Frankfurt.  We were within 20 minutes of boarding when they announced a system wide network failure would not allow them to board passengers on the plane.  Apparently the glitch took down several of the major Euro airlines.  The system came back up within 45 minutes and we boarded.  Eric was doing scenarios of spending the night in Frankfurt eating bratwurst and sourkraut.

Anyway, we made it to Milan and like last year we had to endure a private transfer ride that seemed more like a Grand Prix race.  Some drivers become predators behind the wheel.

We made it to Lenno, unpacked, then staggarded around the waterfront due to lack of sleep.  Check out the pics of our first meal.  The food plus 4 glasses of wine was $35 Euro, and was excellent.

Ciao!!!

We saved our travel insurance reimbursement from last year and put it towards this year's trip.  Eric's detached retinas have healed and while his vision is not great he is ready to roll.  Here is a video of last year's trip.
